Intro to Clay Making

foundation CLASS

Level: Adult Beginner/Mixed Level

$750 PER 12 WEEK FULL SEMESTER - 10 Students

class description

If you are a newbie to clay, this one’s for you! 

This class is for students to build with clay for the first time. Each student will gain the fundamental knowledge of both handbuilding and basic wheel throwing skills. Emphasis will be placed on the material of clay and students will handbuilding techniques of pinch, coil, slab, and extruded clay. Students will be introduced to the wheel, learning how to wedge, center, throw, trim, and glaze. Once students feel they have a good sense of each technique, students can focus their time on either handbuilding or wheel, or both. Various glaze and decoration techniques for finishing work will be introduced in this class. While this is geared towards beginners, it is open to anyone looking to brush up on these foundational skills or have access to both handbuilding (6 weeks) and wheel (6 weeks) in the same class.

Have you ever wanted to throw your own ceramic forms? Using a potter's wheel to make thrown objects is one of the most satisfying crafts to learn. We will teach you the basics of how to center a ball of clay on the wheel and turn it into a finished piece. You will be taught the basic steps and have plenty of time to practice, practice, practice! From wedging to glazing, you will finish the course with pride.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Students across all skill levels are welcome to join our adult Wheel Throwing & Handbuilding For All courses! New students will be introduced to the foundations of using a variety of handbuilding methods and/or the potter's wheel: centering, opening the form, throwing cylinders, cups, bowls, and glazing their work. Intermediate students can take rudimentary practices to the next level by learning how to perfect your forms and create other elements to build on. Advanced participants will have the opportunity to customize their instructional experience based upon their interests and abilities. When we say “For All”, we mean everyone!

 
 

Leveling Up: Wheel Throwing

class description

Once you have gotten the hang of throwing, you’ll be ready for more.  In this intermediate wheel throwing class, mixed-level, non-beginner students are invited to practice wheel-throwing techniques with the goal of refining your approach, building new skills, and challenging yourself to throw more complex  forms. In our intermediate level class, you will learn how to take the skills you’ve learned and strengthen them with more practice and discipline, readying yourself for more challenging pieces.

 

Prerequisite: have taken at least one beginning wheel-throwing class and are quite comfortable with the basics.

 
 

Next Level Wheel Throwing

class description

Now that you’ve mastered the basics and have grown your practice with more complex wheel thrown work, you’re ready to dive into this mixed-level advanced class. You’ll be challenged to throw a variety of more advanced forms and learn how to create components such as lids, spouts, handles, and matching sets. You’ll be combining handbuilding techniques and will finish your work with surface decoration and more in depth glazing. 

Prerequisite: have taken multiple beginning/intermediate wheel-throwing classes and have confidence in all wheel throwing basics, including wedging, centering, and have knowledge of ceramic process.

 
 

Independent Study Ceramics

Wheel throwing Independent Study

Level: Advanced

$750 PER 12 WEEK FULL SEMESTER - Limited to 6 students

This class is particularly great for anyone who wants to hone in on specific techniques or skills, is working on a project and wants individualized guidance, and/or is looking to just become more adept in their clay practice in order to eventually become a member at the studio. This also offers a more intimate setting with just one or two other students at a time with the instructor, at a time that works for you (can fluctuate week to week). This class also comes with unlimited bench time included. The Independent Study course will be offered in two 6-week segments. Students can register for one or both sessions.

Prerequisite: have taken multiple beginning/intermediate classes and have confidence in all wheel throwing or hand building basics, including wedging, centering, and have knowledge of ceramic process.

    • Students meet once a week in group or individually by appointment with Minkyung Choi

    • INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED students with permission from the instructor is needed for registration. Email Education@clayspacebk.com with your inquiries before registering.

    • Once approved, you may register.

  • Min Choi, who has decades of making and teaching experience, will provide personalized instruction depending on your goals. Whether you are intermediate, advanced, or a seasoned professional, you can bring a plan, idea, technical difficulties, or inspiration to meet and work together to get you from point A to point B.

  • Students will set up their weekly instruction schedule with Min based on a mutual coordinated meeting time for 1-2 hours of instruction in small groups. Demonstrations are guided by student requests. Each student has access to Min to ask questions and receive answers and guidance.

    The class size is limited to six students.

Handbuilding is not only an effective way to create functional and sculptural work, but its applications are accessible and endless. For beginners, this class will focus on the basics of how clay works using the fundamental techniques of pinching, coiling, slab building, and extrusion. For those with some experience, you will learn how to push the limits and enhance your mastery. Your instructor will work with advanced students on individual goals and projects using whatever handbuilding methods you prefer. You will have the opportunity to move from one technique to another, using the gambit of tools and skills to create what you envision, be it functional or sculptural.

Handbuilding Tableware

Handbuilt tableware is fun and accessible to all. Plates, bowls, mugs, candleholders, you name it. These can all be made in clay without using the wheel. You’ll learn the basic techniques of pinching, coiling, slab building, and extrusion. These methods all lend themselves to creating objects for the table. Create that set of dinner plates or a cherished mug. You will be guided to the technique that fits your goals best and through firing and glazing, you’ll finish the semester with ware that will adorn your home or the perfect gifts.

 
 
 

Leveling up: Handbuilding

class description

Once you have some experience with hand building, have mastered the various techniques, and have found your passion with the process, bring your practice to new heights (possibly even literally!).

In this class you will learn how to hone in on technical skills, scale up, work with the figure, a bust, or any other type of sculpture or project you have in mind. Learn how to make more complex ideas or build in a larger format and see the projects through to completion. This can include larger functional hand built pieces as well as sculptures because learning how to grow pieces that can withstand the drying and firing process will be one of the many important aspects students in this session will learn.

Prerequisite: have taken multiple beginning/intermediate handbuilding classes and have confidence in all basic hand building techniques, and have knowledge of ceramic process.

 
 
 
 

Class Details

All students will be asked to follow our Clay Space Community Agreements

Discounts: Clay Space Members receive a 10% discount. Code announced in Slack.

Supplies:

  • The class fee includes clay and glaze.

  • Firings are 6 cents per cubic inch for both firings.

  • As a registered student you will have 3 hours per week of bench time. 12-week Session students can purchase a $100 Unlimited Bench time Card for extra practice hours! [Summer only, 8-week card here]

  • Depending on your class selection, please be prepared to purchase Clay Space Tool Kits and supplies if you do not already have them. Each class registration has descriptions and links to all products sold in our shop! They can be stored in the classroom and towels and aprons should be taken home weekly for cleaning.

  • Clay Space is open to students M-Sa 10am-9.30pm, Su 10am-9pm during every semester.

Waitlist:

If open spots become available in a waitlisted course, waitlisted students will be contacted to register. Please note, we notify the whole waitlist at once and space in classes is first come first serve.

Missed Class Policy:

We do our best to work with your schedule and offer up to 3 makeups to our students to be used within the current semester only. To make up a class, you must arrive at a comparable class on time and wait to see if there is an open spot. If there is not, you cannot make up the class at this time. If there is a spot, ask the instructor if you can attend. They have the option to agree or not. Makeups cannot be guaranteed and there is no refund for missed classes. If you cannot fulfill a makeup class, you can receive an additional 3 hours of benchtime for this missed class. Email Education@clayspacebk.com with your class information to receive these accommodations, but do not ask us to arrange a make up.

 

Cancellation Policy:

If you register for the wrong class, please email to be transferred, do not double book, or you will be charged a change of registration fee of 3%.

To request a cancellation and full refund minus a $50 processing fee, you must contact us in writing within 10 days prior to the first class of your session. A refund of 50% (of the entire class fee) will be honored if requested within 1 week of the first class. There are no refunds or tuition applied to another semester once the session begins. Students are responsible to pay for the entire semester if they have chosen the payment plan. Email Education@clayspacebk.com with your cancellation request.

Because of the uncertainty with COVID-19, if the CDC guidelines change at any point before or during the session we will follow the state’s requirements.

We May Cancel:

If the class does not fill sufficiently, we may cancel and try to move students to another class, apply tuition to another class or semester, or provide a full refund.

COVID-19 Protocols:

Clay Space is mask optional. If the CDC guidelines change at any point before or during the session we will follow the state’s requirements. In the event of a shut down, wherever possible, we will provide materials and online instruction to fulfill the remainder of the session. Where this is not possible, we will give you credit towards another current or future class, firing, or materials.

Video & Photographs:

Clay Space reserves the right to use photographs and/or videos taken during classes & workshops to market and promote our programs. Any student or legal guardian who does not wish to have his or her child photographed will be able to opt-out during registration.
